Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS) Wales. Big changes are coming for Welsh farmers. Let Prag Take the Stress Out of Soil Testing

🌱 Get Ready for the Sustainable Farming Scheme 2026 – Let Prag Take the Stress Out of Soil Testing

Big changes are coming for Welsh farmers. From 1 January 2026, you’ll be able to join the new Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS) — or stick with the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) for a little while longer. But with the BPS being phased out by 2029, now’s the time to start preparing for the switch.

One of the key parts of the new scheme is all about soil health — something every farmer knows makes or breaks a crop. That’s where Prag can lend a hand.

🗓 Key Dates to Keep in Mind

  • Scheme starts: 1 January 2026
  • Applications open: March to 15 May each year
  • How to apply: Through the Single Application Form (SAF) on Rural Payments Wales (RPW) Online Rural Payments Wales Online

If you decide to join the SFS, one of the first things you’ll need to do is test your soil under the UA1: Soil Health action.

🌾 What the UA1 Soil Health Action Means for You

To meet the SFS rules, you’ll need to:

  • Test at least 20% of your improved land each year
  • Make sure all of your improved land is tested within a five-year cycle

Each soil sample needs to be checked for:

  • Potassium (K)
  • Phosphorus (P)
  • Magnesium (Mg)
  • pH levels
  • Soil Organic Matter (SOM)

If you’ve already done soil testing for K, P, Mg and pH in the last four years, that testing will still count — even if it didn’t include Soil Organic Matter.

All your results will need to be recorded on RPW Online, which helps Wales build a national picture of soil health (don’t worry, your individual data stays private).
